I am able to do a wide variety of subjects, excluding anything illegal.

At this time, I do not do tattoo designs, portraits of real people and pets, complicated scenes, environments, or mechanical objects. This may be subject to change in the future.

If you wish to commission me, please send a message to rachelr_commissions@yahoo.ca that includes a detailed explanation of what you want, as well as a clear, large reference image of your character. It’s not necessary, but greatly appreciated if you include reference photos of the pose you want your character to be in. Feel free to throw in any other sort of reference images you may think will help me.

*More important stuff under the break.*

Signal boosting for an artist whose work I really respect.  She’s amazing guys.

Why Crediting is Important

whatiscredit:

imageimageimage

What’s supposed to happen

imageimageimageimage

What’s happening when you don’t credit

imageimage

What you’re making them do

Every artist grow by displaying their work and getting critique. But when their work is spread around without any credit to the artist, AND EVEN MAKES THE OWN ARTIST DELETE IT FROM HIS/HER SITE it lost the purpose and meaning.

What’s surprising is how often this needs to be repeated on Tumblr considering how bloody simple the “reblog” button is.

Responses to Killa-7’s comments on my art

Typed up from a screen-cap of your comments on my dash because Tumblr eats an earlier reply if the same poster subsequently replies to the same post, which is only one of the many stupid things about its commenting system.

And may I give you a tip?  Her hand looks a little bit like what they are doing in Star Trek. ;D  Try by yourself randomly to rub something of of your shoulder like that. It won’t work easily. It’s better to put the ring and middle finger together, this you can do randomly by yourself! :)

Thanks.  Hands are something in my drawing that I really do need to work on.  As this was meant to be a quick sketch but it does highlight one of my major weaknesses.  I’ll keep this in mind for the future.

I like huntress!  Her past a little like mine.

Really?

In which case you should follow the Helena Bertinelli Huntress tumblr run by my friend Steph who uses it to post all on things related to the Helena Bertinelli incarnation of the Huntress, including this brilliant essay on her origin as originally presented in the comics. (Which have since been modified.)

Did I tell you that I like your style of drawing?

No but…

…thanks.

the-life-of-a-jerk:

In mine he looks still pretty young and stuff, but in your universe it’s related to the show, where he’s older I think.
Yeah. that’s the part I am not certain about.  In the few scenes we see him in such as here, here, and here he’s generally portrayed with this line under his eye that you don’t see in other stallions on the show.  There is this one scene from “The Best Night Ever” where it disappears, but y’know animation error.

This could indicate that he’s older.  Twilight Sparkle’s parents were depicted here with much lines under their eyes indicating their age.  On the other hand the lines are short, straight, and angular, while Soarin’s are long and round.  I’m not sure if the animation team wanted him to be older or randomly gave him a distinguishing physical feature. Rich Shade of Blue has kept these lines while depicting Soarin’ as looking youthful.

Me?  I really haven’t decided.  IraeCoal did this SoarinJack picture awhile back based on the idea that Soarin’ is noticeably older than the mane six, and in the context of his relationship with AJ it’s something that makes him very insecure.  Tempting to use, though I’m not sure if I want to try that angle…yet.
DOOOM!
TAKE THAT, DASH
SHY GOT THERE FIRST!

Ha! See, I wasn’t even thinking potential love triangle, as I tend not to ship SoarDash.

Nor do I.  Nor was I thinking love triangle.  I just found his comment funny.

On the other hand it does raise a good question: is Dash jealous?  And why?  Because Shy got Soarin’, or that Soarin’ got Shy and not her? :p

Also, Pony Joe? No, no, no. Pony Joe clearly belongs to Rarity. She thinks he’d look good in a tux, after all.

Of course!  How I could be so blind!?

Today, November 11, is Remembrance Day in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and in numerous other commonwealth countries, as well as France and Belgium.  Germany celebrates what is known as Volkstrauertag, or ‘People’s Mourning Day’which commemorates not only the soldiers who died in war, but all those who died in war or at the hands of violent oppression.  It’s the only national holiday that I know of that gives such a wide scope of thought to the results of violence. In the Commonwealth, the poppy is a symbol of remembrance and was adopted by Moina Michael, an American YMCA worker who wore it to remember the dead of the First World War.  She got the idea from a poem by John McCrae, a Canadian Lieutenant Colonel who served in the First World War, called “In Flanders Fields”.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow       Between the crosses, row on row,    That mark our place; and in the sky    The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,    Loved and were loved, and now we lie          In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw    The torch; be yours to hold it high.    If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow          In Flanders fields.

This poem is iconic in Canada and is read at Remembrance Day services the country over, though ironically it was probably more militant in intent given the text and having been written early on in the war before the disillusionment and bitterness set in.  (Hence it was roundly criticized, quite understandably, by anti-war historian Paul Fussell who served in the second World War who originally wanted to be a journalist until he say his sergeant killed beside him.)  Yet it almost never seems to take on that feeling in its readings, given the stress that Remembrance Day ceremonies place on the terrible cost and toll of the war.  Arguably, more people are inclined to regard the last line as a call to avoid war and bloodshed…which is a transformation I’m certainly comfortable with. Okay, another work in which I continue with the experimental style for ponies where they actually sorta look like horses and not quadraped marshmallows with duck faces.
This is also a bit of a transitional piece and an awkward one as far as finished products go.  This time my gripes have less to do with the composition and more to do with the shading.  Essentially I was fucking around with the shading on My Paint, using solid colours that could pass as shadow rather than a darker-yet-transparent brush tool. So far so good, but at some point I decide to futz around with one of the water tools in Set #3, but not in any precise way.  Nooooooo.  Instead I scrawl all over the shadows - particularly on Dash’s mom - and make a big hash of things.  Oh well it doesn’t look to bad with the finished product, but that’s because I have big ole’ drop shadow over everything, via GIMP’s Filters under ‘Light and Shadow’.  The light parts were achieved by taking the Soft-Eraser tool from My Paint’s ‘Set #1’ and careful rubbing it on spots to eke away the shadows and try to get a receding light effect.  So lots of experimenting all around and a valuable education.
Though some of you are probably more interested in Dash’s mom…well there’s a story behind that…
Also, I’ll confess the idea for this was inspired by Cartoonlion’s picture of Fillyshy asking for a juice box WARNING TACTICAL NUCLEAR CUTENESS INVOLVED.

Work in progress I started before the computer crash and am continuing on the one I’m borrowing until I get mine back.  (Note: using My Paint in Windows is a bitch…or at least it as on other people’s computers for some reason.)  And yes that’s meant to be Dash as a filly.  Why is she looking up at you with desperate pleading eyes?  Is this some tragic event from her past?  Is she begging the artist not to kill off her parents? Welp managed to recover a bunch of art projects

During my recent computer problems I had to move out many of my files via dropbox, which at some points proved to be a slow, painful process. I zipped some of them together just so I could upload them as a single file, especially when during that period where the file manager on Ubuntu Studio seemingly stopped working normally (it later started working normally again). This strange behaviour makes more sense having found out that my hard drive was apparently melting or something. One of these was a zip file with a bunch drawings I had started on the computer via My Paint rather than being built off of a drawing I had scanned. When I went to finally check it this weekend I found out that the zip file was corrupt.

After the initial teeth gnashing and wailing I looked up how to fix a corrupt zip file and found the free program, zip repair wizard: [link]

It managed to pretty much recover the entire archive except for one file, and it was one I was thinking of re-drawing to be honest. This is a huge relief to me.

Now, to wait for the computer to get back to me. (I’m working from a loaner right now.)
